Disposing Amine Waste

Challenge Overview
EnvironmentIndustrial CleaningProcess Engineering
Description

Amine waste (MDEA and DEA based) from Refinery units has been found very difficult to treat by Biological Processes. External disposal for liquid waste attracts heavy cost and even the mode of disposal (to landfill) should not be supported even though the receiving company is authorized. Concentration of Amine in waste and wash water varies. It can be typically <5% to up to 40% in waste amine whereas it is typically in 100 to 300 ppm level in wash water or shutdown effluents. In tanks, bottom sludge is also found.

Oxidation using BDD electrodes , Advanced oxidation e.g. UV-H202 based, Incineration using drum incinerators, solidification using Super absorbing polymer etc. appear as promising technologies.

Amine reclamation by skid mounted units have been tried in past but has limitation and Operations are reluctant to consider full resuse due to reliability issues.

It would be more than welcome to try any of these disposal technologies as we have currently some stock of waste from previous shutdown.

Target for treatment should be ideally to achieve less than 10 ppm or ultimate destruction e.g. by Incineration, though for the later emission control will be also required.
