About the webinar:
Geothermal energy offers a vast, continuously renewed heat resource, estimated at over 44 terawatts‑thermal from Earth’s interior, more than double global energy demand. Yet unlocking this potential through Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) remains constrained by subsurface challenges, particularly thermal short‑circuiting, uneven flow distribution, reservoir thermal decline, and poor heat‑sweep efficiency.
This presentation introduces Autonomous Flow Control Devices (AFCDs) as an advanced completion technology designed to mitigate these limitations. AFCDs regulate zone‑by‑zone flow within geothermal wells to prevent preferential pathways, improve fluid conformance, enhance heat extraction, and prolong reservoir productivity. Through modelling case studies, the work demonstrates that AFCD completions can deliver measurable gains, such as increased temperature output over multi‑year production periods, compared with conventional completion designs.
The session further highlights field analogues, design specifications, and material considerations for high‑temperature, high‑pressure geothermal environments, drawing on deployment experience from oil-and-gas applications. Overall, the study shows how applying intelligent completion concepts from the petroleum sector can materially improve EGS performance, offering a scalable pathway to more efficient, reliable geothermal developments.
