£347 a Minute
Sometimes the most critical protection comes in a bright yellow package no bigger than a dustbin. That was certainly the case when ThinJack was called in to safeguard one of Britain's most significant energy projects: a four-well gas drilling platform that would eventually supply 6% of the nation's gas.
The brief seemed straightforward enough: protect sealing rings, hangers, and wellhead equipment from dropped objects during drilling operations hundreds of kilometres southeast of Aberdeen.
But as with most offshore projects, the devil was in the details, and the clock was ticking at half a million pounds a day all-up costs.
The Problem With Promises
Here's what made this project particularly challenging: everyone promised us the technical drawings we needed, but no one could actually deliver them. Week after week, the same conversation played out in circles.
"Yes, the drawings are available." "The client wants you to have them." "We will send them over."
But nothing arrived. With a six month timeline already under pressure and fabrication deadlines looming, we couldn't afford to wait for paperwork that might never materialise.
So we did what ThinJack does best: we found another way.
Sometimes It's Who You Know
Sometimes the best solutions come from unexpected places. In this case, it came from Guy's neighbour, who just happened to be the engineering director at the client’s contractor.
"I went round for a chat," Guy recalls. "He said we could solve it in about an hour"
And that's exactly what happened. Instead of waiting for official drawings that were trapped in corporate bureaucracy, they worked together at a computer, manually cross-checking dimensions and verifying measurements against ThinJack’s drawings. No client or contractor drawings changed hands, but the problem was solved.
More Than Just A Yellow Dustbin
What sets ThinJack's HoleGuards apart isn't just their bright yellow colour. It's the engineering that goes into making them fit precisely where they're needed.
Unlike other approaches that simply place makeshift covers over equipment, ThinJack's solution creates a rigidly contained air gap around the equipment. Built-in elastomer padding protects the surfaces they sit on, while the custom fit covers the minimum circular area possible, making them lightweight, compact, and easy to install.
At £347 per minute of rig time, precision matters. A lot.
The Numbers That Matter
Here's the compelling mathematics of offshore protection: with project costs running at half a million per day, every ten minutes of saved rig time is worth £3,500. That's about what one HoleGuard unit costs, meaning each piece of protection pays for itself in just ten minutes of more efficient operations because the alternatives to HoleGuard didn’t need an hour of tightening bolted clamps.
Multiply that across three HoleGuard sizes and four wells, and the value becomes clear. Faster sequencing of installations, earlier unihead installation, and robust protection from dropped objects and side impacts.
Why This Matters
With any project’s headlines, one thing remained constant: the need for equipment that would perform flawlessly when drilling started.
"We prefer to mitigate the potential problem in advance, rather than deal with the huge cost consequences of damage to an installed hanger," the client explained. In an industry where a single mistake can cost millions and delay crucial energy supplies, prevention isn't just smart, it's essential.
When you're protecting equipment that will help supply 6% of Britain's gas, there's no room for "good enough." There's only room for solutions that work, delivered by people who understand that sometimes the most important innovations come in bright yellow packages with cartoon faces.
Because sometimes, the difference between success and disaster is measured in the ten minutes you save, and the equipment you protect along the way.
